The 2.5-liter 16-valve engine appeared in 1988. It replaced the smaller M102 2.3-16v engine, which was the M102 2.3-liter engine mainly with the 16-valve cylinder head. Cosworth designed the 2.5-16v. The engine has the aluminum cylinder head with four valves per cylinder, developed and produced by Cosworth, two overhead camshafts.
Some years ago, I purchased a used '92 180E (low cost version of the 190E 1.8 here in Aus). It had the same symptoms you describe, difficult cold starting followed by lean running until warm, high idle speed etc. A new fuse in the OVP relay and it was an entirely different car. Coincidently, it had a new battery.

The reason I went with the one I have is that I couldn't find a non-USA 190E 2.6 one for sale at a reasonable price. The one I've installed (008 545 62 32) has timing of 6-11° BTDC at idle, as opposed to the 7-11° of the original, and 27-31° at 3200rpm as opposed to 25-29° (without vacuum). With vacuum both are 40-44°.
A 90 horsepower, 2.5 liter five-cylinder replaced the 2.2 for 1986, accompanied in 1987 by a highly desirable turbocharged variant with 122 hp, which was inexplicably discontinued after only one year. The engine continued, sans turbo, before Mercedes dropped the 190D from its US lineup altogether in 1990.
If you purchase the car, you should immediately replace all fluids and filters (don't forget that pesky fuel filter) to avoid significant problems.
